Reveries
featuring Threadwinners
July 8, 2017 through August 18, 2017

Reveries is an immersive installation of various crocheted landscapes; a dreamy collection of environments, including flower and succulent gardens, a massive waterfall, and a park-like lawn area. The imagery found in each landscape environment ranges from realistic renderings of foliage to metaphorical gardens found in the human body and skeleton. Material choices are eclectic and unique to each landscape, with buttons, floral pins, and - of course - yarn, depicting a coral reef, while pompoms and crocheted mushrooms build up the lawn area.

Reveries asks the audience to consider the definition and connotations of a landscape, stretching one’s imagination beyond the implications of a typical landscape painting. Threadwinner artists Alyssa Arney and Liz Flynn hope their work will provide reflection on how humans are both stewards and consumers of the earth, simultaneously cultivating and destroying the world around us.

A portion of all artwork sales will be donated to the Sierra Club Angeles Chapter. There will also be several events throughout the exhibition, including workshops on July 15th and 22nd and an artist talk on July 15th. More information will be released closer to event dates, and will be available on our website as well.

About Threadwinners

Threadwinners is the moniker for the crochet collaborative comprised of Liz Flynn and Alyssa Arney. They began working together in 2013 as interns at the Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA) and started making art as Threadwinners in 2016. Flynn has an Art History BA from University of California, Riverside and works in LA. Arney has a Printmaking BFA from the John Herron School of Art and Design-IUPUI and works in Orange County. Threadwinners, a play on the concept of the typically masculine term “breadwinner,” aim to subvert the patriarchy and status quo through the vehicle of crochet. They examine American and pop culture, the body, psychology, nature, gender roles, and femininity in their work.
